How to Stop Microsoft Internet Explorer redirecting to Microsoft Edge

Windows 10 now comes with two browsers, the old Internet Explorer and the Edge browser, which is a newer generation chromium-based browser. The Internet Explorer is supported until 2023. Obviously, Edge is Microsoft’s favourite and will update periodically for security improvements.

Internet Explorer sometimes struggles to correctly load dynamic web content with newer technologies. That’s why the browser first checks that it has the capabilities of loading the site before displaying content. Microsoft also maintains a list of all the sites that are incompatible with Internet Explorer.

Whenever Internet Explorer can’t render that page, it will automatically redirect you to the Microsoft Edge browser. This means it’ll try Edge first if Internet Explorer doesn’t display the page correctly for whatever reason.

This caused an issue when accessing the legacy web application. In my case, I tried to access the Telstra MBRS billing website. It keeps redirecting to Edge and this web application will not run properly on Edge.

Solution – How to stop this redirecting

Launch the Microsoft Edge application.

Click the 3 dots on the top right corner and select the Settings option.

On the left navigation, select the Default Browser option.

On the Default browser page, under the Let Internet Explorer open sites in Microsoft Edge, select the Never option.
